- GalNet symposium and annual members meeting in Helsinki at the SSIEM venue August 25 -28, 2026
During the 2026 SSIEM congress in Helsinki we had our annual galactosemia network (GalNet) symposium (August 26). It was again an inspiring meeting with many attendees from the various country members.
Here a summary of the program Highlights:
1. Clinical Readiness Project: Poster P065 was available at the venue. Our manuscript with GalNet recommendations to support clinical trials in classic galactosemia including a set of validated measures (primary outcomes) and exploratory markers (secondary endpoints), is ready for submission.
2. Sexual Health Project: Discussed the knowledge gap in affected individuals and a proposal for a joint project.
3. Dietary Yeast Research: Presented research on a baker’s yeast that consumes galactose in the gut, which could allow for more dietary galactose and improve quality of life (more research needed).
4. Gene Therapy: Exciting presentation on gene therapy targeted to the ovary.
5. Zebrafish Model: Covered prenatal fingerprints of dysregulation and the role of myoinositol in prenatal pathogenesis.
6. Clinical Trials: Plenary discussion on myoinositol trials, starting with an adult safety study potentially combined with phase 2 efficacy.

This year’s meeting focus was on the treatment landscape and the valuable perspectives of patients, explored through presentations, interactive work sessions, and discussions. It was again an inspiring and successful meeting!

- Joint GalNet EGS Meeting November 15 and 16, 2024
November 15-17, the annual EGS/GalNet meeting was held in Amsterdam. EGS is the European Galactosaemia Patient Association (www.galactosaemia.eu), and GalNet is the International Galactosaemia Network for professionals (www.galactosemianetwork.org). The event was attended by participants from 22 countries. This year’s theme was Roads to Better Care. Professionals from various countries presented their research on potential new therapies for galactosaemia. Plans were also discussed to update the guidelines for diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment of galactosaemia with the latest insights.
In addition, initiatives were presented to develop better outcome measures, such as the use of AI, that are necessary to assess the effectiveness of new treatments. In a separate session, patient representatives shared their priorities and vision on new treatment modalities with professionals. It was an inspiring meeting, with concrete plans to collectively improve care for this patient group.
